Chiropractic Care for Epilepsy & Seizures
A seizure is caused by a malfunction of the electrical system in the brain. Seizures that occur more than once are called epilepsy. Symptoms of a seizure may be:
· Convulsions
· Staring into space
· Muscle spasms
· Altered consciousness
· Loss of consciousness
Epilepsy can plague people of all ages. Some children develop the disorder at a young age. Epilepsy can result from trauma during birth, serious head injury, or brain infections such as encephalitis or meningitis. Whatever the cause of the disorder, it involves a malfunction of the electrical system in the brain. Damage to nerves anywhere in your body can interrupt the normal electrical function of your brain. Your chiropractor searches for and locates spinal misalignments and subluxations. A subluxation is a compression of a spinal nerve, caused by a vertebra that has become out of place. This condition can put pressure on nerves, which can interrupt the normal communication between your body and your brain. Chiropractic adjustments can restore the normal flow of information and restore normal brain function.
Research has shown that there is a correlation between subluxations and seizures, and that reducing vertebral subluxations reduces the frequency of some types of seizures. Other forms of trauma to the spine may also cause epilepsy. Therefore, anyone with epilepsy is encouraged to see a chiropractor and be evaluated for possible vertebral subluxations or other nerve abnormalities.
Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to be effective in decreasing the frequency and the severity of seizures. In some cases, patients have improved to the point where prescription drugs can be discontinued.
