Chiropractic Care for Scoliosis
Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine. In severe cases of scoliosis, the spine commonly forms an S shape or C shape. Symptoms of scoliosis may include:
· The head appears off center
· One hip or shoulder is higher than the other
· One whole side of the body appears higher than the other
· Back pain
Scoliosis may be classified as structural or nonstructural scoliosis. With structural scoliosis, the spine is curved and rotated. The condition is irreversible. The cause of most cases of structural scoliosis is unknown. For a small percentage of sufferers, the affliction can be attributed to a birth defect, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, other disease, or injury. In nonstructural scoliosis, the spine is curved, but not rotated. In some cases, the affliction is a temporary condition caused by a muscle spasm, appendicitis, or one leg being shorter than the other.
Scoliosis may occur in adults due to degeneration of the spine as we age. Osteoporosis or osteoarthritis can result in scoliosis. Whatever the cause of the scoliosis, your chiropractor will assess the composition and arrangement of the bones in your body, paying special attention to the vertebrae of your entire spine. Then, after making a thorough assessment of your spinal structure, he/she will prescribe a course of action to improve your condition as much as possible. The goal is to restore normal spinal alignment to relieve pain and improve body function. In many cases, the appearance as well as the general health of the individual can be improved.
