Chiropractic Care for Chronic Fatigue & Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder characterized by widespread pain and a heightened and painful response to pressure. Other symptoms include inability to sleep, joint stiffness, and chronic fatigue. Severe symptoms of this disorder can be debilitating, resulting in an inability to work or carry on anything close to a normal, active life.
A majority of fibromyalgia sufferers are also afflicted with chronic fatigue syndrome. Symptoms of this disorder include:
· extreme and recurring fatigue to the point where the patient can’t get out of bed
· dizziness
· headache
· nausea
· inability to sleep well
· stiffness in various parts of the body
· extreme sensitivity to noise
· extreme sensitivity to stress
· inability to think clearly
Exercise has been shown to lessen the severity of fibromyalgia symptoms in most patients. Strengthening and aerobic conditioning exercises, as well as exercises that promote improved range of motion, can improve the health of the fibromyalgia patient. Exercise boosts the level of endorphins, which are naturally-occurring, pain-fighting substances in the body. Exercise also increases the level of serotonin in the brain, a substance associated with feelings of well-being.
Abnormalities in the central nervous system have been correlated with symptoms of fibromyalgia. Actual causes of fibromyalgia are unknown, but traumatic neck injury is one possible cause. Symptoms may appear immediately after the injury occurs, or may take months or years to develop. Your chiropractor can assess the position of the vertebrae in your spine and adjust the vertebrae to restore normal blood flow and nerve function. Chiropractic and acupuncture have provided effective relief for many who suffer with fibromyalgia symptoms.
