Chiropractic Care for Relief of Headache

Headache is one of the most common ailments that affect people of all ages. Headache may be caused by various stimulii, including consumption of alcohol, food allergies, hunger, or tension.
A tension headache is a reaction of our body to everyday or unusual stress. Without being aware of it, we tense the muscles in our neck, shoulders, and back. Eventually, the tensed muscles can pull the bones of our spine out of their normal position, pinching the nerves and blood vessels that run through the spaces in the vertebrae. Chiropractic adjustments can reduce muscle spasms that lead to tension headaches.
Migraine headache is a chronic neurological disorder that typically affects only one half of the head. It often produces pulsating pain and lasts from a few hours to a few days. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, and an increased sensitivity to light and sound.  Some migraine sufferers experience fleeting visual disturbances such as flashing lights at the perimeter of their field of vision. Chiropractic adjustments and acupuncture can reduce the frequency and the duration of migraine headaches.
Headache can also be caused by injury to the neck which may occur during an automobile accident or as the result of a fall. The person may not be aware that the neck injury has occurred for several days or even weeks after the accident, even though the cervical spine has been disturbed. Suddenly, the person notices the onset of troubling headaches. These headaches are called “cervicogenic headaches” because they are the result of injury to the cervical spine.  A chiropractor can adjust the cervical vertebrae back to their normal position, thus relieving strain to muscles, blood vessels, and nerves.
Over-the-counter or prescription medications may dull the pain of headache, but they do not solve the problem. A chiropractor can maneuver bones back into their normal position, restore normal nerve function and blood flow, and eliminate the tension or migraine headache, as well as headaches caused by undiagnosed injury.
